VALLEJO, Calif. – The penultimate regatta of the 2022-23 season will take Cal Maritime to Cascade Locks, Oregon, for this year's Rainier Cup. As defending champions, the Keelhaulers will look to successfully defend its title before returning home and ending its year the following weekend in Honolulu at the Open Fleet Race Championship at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
This weekend's regatta will mark the final competition for Julia Mast and Becca Masliah, a pair of seniors who played key roles within the program and will graduate in early May. It was their efforts that led to a historic first for the dinghy program when Cal Maritime competed in its inaugural women's regatta last February and another one this spring.
Sailing will head to Oregon off a fourth-place finish at last weekend's Open Team Race Championship; since the Rainier Cup is open to the same group of Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference institutions, in addition to as many as three teams from other conferences, CSUM will face familiar foes for the second weekend in a row.
Each school has the option to field as many JV teams, but limited to one varsity open and one varsity women's squad.
This is a two-division regatta (A/B) sailed in FJs. First warning on Saturday is slated for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. No races will commence on the second day of racing after 3 p.m.
