Keelhaulers win St. Francis Invite in dominating fashion
SAN FRANCISCO – Cal Maritime won the inaugural race of the St. Francis Invite, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club and UC Santa Cruz, and never looked back as it led from start to finish to win its second championship within the last four regattas.
Representing Cal Maritime throughout the weekend were Logan Chapman, Sam Jennings, Mateo Krok and Nick Mueller,
Including that first result, CSUM collected four bullets throughout the weekend, finished first or second in the first three races of the A and B divisions, and posted top-three results in each of the first nine combined races.
Of the 15 combined races, the Keelhaulers finished within the top three all but once; they finished second in six races and increased their lead over the rest of the field each round.
Cal Maritime posted the lowest score in the A and B Division, finishing with 14 and 19 points, respectively. Its combined total was 17 points fewer that Cal State Channel Islands (50) and almost half of third place Rice (57).
Entering Sunday's action, Cal Maritime led the regatta with 11 points — seven points were earned in A Division competition, the other four points took place against other B Division teams — half as many at Cal who sat in second place at the midway point of this two-day event.
