Cal Maritime captures third at the Richard Sweet Match Race Championship
SAN DIEGO – Cal Maritime won seven head-to-head races against a field that included Hawai'i, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, Cal and USC when it traveled to San Diego for the Richard Sweet Match Race Championship.
The Keelhaulers ended their weekend with seven total wins throughout the double-round-robin regatta by defeating UCSB, Cal and USC in the first and second rounds, in addition to Stanford in the second round.
"For freshman skipper Tate Oyler, this was his first regatta after a two-year hiatus from racing. As he knocked off the rust, together with the crew, everyone really started to gel," said head coach Kerry Deaver "They had equal or better boat speed and tactically improved throughout the day.
"The team consisted of two sophomores and two freshmen, so lots of runway ahead for learning and improving. It was a good regatta, I'm proud of the way they batted back after opening up with two losses."
Stanford ended up winning the event with eight victories out of 10 races and Hawai'i also won seven; by defeating Cal Maritime in both rounds, that head-to-head tiebreaker allowed it to finish second with Cal Maritime collecting third.
This is the first of two regattas, in as many weekends, in San Diego as Cal Maritime will return to competition on Saturday at the two-day UCSD Open, hosted by UC San Diego at the Mission Bay Yacht Club.
