Women's Basketball lets lead slip, falls in overtime
Senior Kiara Warren dropped in a jumper from the baseline with less than a second left to tie the game for the Lady Keelhaulers before La Sierra pulled away in overtime in a thrilling 58-50 loss.
Cal Maritime came out full steam ahead going on a 9-0 run to open the game. The Golden Eagles didn't score their first basket until 22 seconds left in the first quarter. The Lady Keelhaulers held the Golden Eagles to just 19 percent shooting from the floor in the first half, including 1-10 (10 percent) from beyond the arc, leading 22-16 at halftime.
The third quarter featured a back and forth contest with both teams matching each other bucket for bucket. Cal Maritime ended the third quarter strong with a five point run leading 38-32 from a Kameron Taylor three and a steal off a La Sierra inbound and lay in from Junior Valiceia Horne.
The fourth quarter seemed to be all Cal Maritime as the Golden Eagles weren't able to buy a basket for majority of the quarter, being held scoreless once again for a stretch of six minutes opening the fourth.
Things went south for the Lady Keelhaulers at 3:00 left when a Kayla De Leon three and foul off the ball on De'Brianna Hampton led to a five point play for the Golden Eagle shifting momentum on their side, trailing 44-39. They would end up taking their first lead on the night after a Siena Jones three with 2:04 left to play leading 46-45.
Cal Maritime would find themselves down 48-46 with eight seconds left after a timeout from Coach Dennis Cox. They would inbound and find the ball in senior Kiara Warren's hands as she turned the corner and put up the game tying shot from the baseline with .2 seconds left.
La Sierra would end up taking control in overtime where Madelyn Moya scored five quick unanswered points for the Golden Eagles and eventually winning the game 58-50.
Kameron Taylor led all Lady Keelhaulers with 17 points and grabbed six rebounds, while fellow senior Apollonia Illalio added eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Senior Tyra Fai'malo had a team high 10 rebounds for Cal Maritime.
Cal Maritime falls to 4-19, and drops to 2-7 in Cal Pac play as the Golden Eagles improve to 14-11 and 5-4 in conference action. -
