VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime will ring in the new year with its inaugural pair of Cal Pac Conference games when it heads to Simpson for Saturday's 5:30 p.m. season opener before hosting UC Merced two days later in the team's first home league game.
Tipoff for Monday's matchup against the Bobcats, at PEAC Gym, is set for 5:30 p.m.
A unique situation for women's basketball will end this weekend when it returns to the court since its last game took place on December 12 when they faced Southern Oregon in the final game of their home tournament — the Keelhauler Classic.
Just like Cal Maritime and its exhibition scheduled for December 30 at Holy Names, the Red Hawks were forced to cancel their final league tune-up, at William Jessup, out of an abundance of caution due to rising COVID-19 rates.
Due to the Holy Names' situation, the Keelhaulers' 27-day break will conclude when action begins in Redding.
Simpson will also end a lengthy hiatus of its own this weekend in that team's first contest since December 19 when it traveled to Oregon to face Portland State in its final non-conference matchup of the season.
In their last trip to Simpson, which took place on January 4, 2020, the Keelhaulers topped the Red Hawks, 60-56, to pick up their third head-to-head victory in the last 11 played.
Senior Breesia Northern leads Simpson in scoring at 10.9 points per game, closely followed by junior Sandra Berrocal and her 10.0 ppg average.
Two days after the Keelhaulers return from Redding, they will welcome back UC Merced — it visited PEAC Main Gym on December 10 for the Keelhauler Classic's opening game against Oregon Tech — for their inaugural Cal Pac home game.
That tournament contest was one of only two games played by the Bobcats throughout the month of December, and the team's last appearance on the court since late-month games at Fresno State and Menlo College did not take place as scheduled.
Two of UC Merced's first three December games were cancelled as well; sandwiched between another pair of road games at Santa Clara and Nevada was a 10-point road loss at UC Santa Cruz.
The Bobcats' game at Cal Maritime is the only road event taking place throughout the first two weeks of the season since they will battle Pacific Union in Saturday's Cal Pac opener. La Sierra and Antelope Valley will visit Merced next week before the team plays its following four games on the road.
Cal Maritime will head to Merced on February 3; its series finale against Simpson will take place in Vallejo two days later.
