VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime never trailed at any point of Saturday's action at PEAC Pool and earned a sweep of its inaugural set of games at the CWPA Tournament #2 by defeating UC Davis in the tournament opener, 9-5, and UC Santa Cruz 10-2.
Women's water polo will return to action on Sunday and face San Francisco at 12:10 p.m. before squaring off against Saint Mary's in the event's 3:40 p.m. finale.
The Keelhaulers will enter Sunday's action with a 2-1 overall record.
"I am proud of the way everyone played today," said head coach Matt De Trane. "The team has been working hard since the start of the season and it showed throughout the day."
In the inaugural match of the tournament, CSUM scored all three goals recorded by either team in the first period and entered halftime leading 5-1.
Even though the Aggies scored four of the next six goals, and trailed 7-5 with six minutes left in the final period,
As quickly as UC Davis pulled closer to tying the score, the Keelhaulers extended their lead, thanks to a pair of goals from Ryan Wallace, earned within one minute of action, that cemented the result for CSUM and ultimately became the game's final score.
When women's water polo returned to the water later that afternoon, it wasted no time returning to form since Cal Maritime scored eight unanswered before UC Santa Cruz ended its shutout bid.
Olivia Larwood was responsible for five of those eight goals, scoring three times in the opening period — one the Keelhaulers led 4-0 before earning the only goals scored throughout the second quarter.
After collecting eight saves against UC Davis, Cate Anderson stopped another five to help Cal Maritime earned its first daily sweep in the last three years.
"UC Davis beat us last year, earning that win showed how much we have improved since then."
De Trane added, "thank you to all the fans who braved the rain to support us today."
