VALLEJO, Calif. – The long wait is over for Cal Maritime men's basketball fans because the 2022-23 season will officially commence Friday at 7:30 p.m. when the Menlo Oaks visit PEAC Main Gym for each team's season opener and Frank Dye Memorial Game — named after a local resident who lived within shouting distance from campus and served as the Keelhaulers' basketball scorekeeper for nearly three decades.
When he first started volunteering, he was part of a small crew that consisted Howard McGlone, Larry Asera and himself.
Last season, the Keelhaulers advanced to the semifinal round of the Cal Pac Conference Men's Basketball Championship; returning to the court for third-year head coach Tim Bross are senior guard Braxton Adderly, senior forward Miles Pennington, junior forward Divine Nwoko, sophomore guards Alex Maze, Angelo Nicandro and Parker Wight.
Joining this talented group of returners are nine newcomers, a group that includes seven transfers — Justice Cole, Richard Corona, Lee Jones Jr., Shawn Kelly, Everett Perrot, Alex Rentsch, Lunden Taylor — and two freshmen in DJ Henry and Miles Macayan.
This matchup against Menlo is one of two home games taking place throughout the inaugural weeks of the season since the Keelhaulers will head to the Oaks' home court the following afternoon to face Montana Western in a neutral-site event.
After playing two games within a 24-hour timespan, a week will pass until Cal Maritime returns to action when its hosts Westmont on Saturday, November 5, at 3 p.m. Within the following week are two local road games that will take CSUM to UC Davis and back to Menlo on November 9 (6 p.m.) and 12 (2 p.m.), respectively.
A familiar face will visit campus on Friday in Menlo head coach Brendan Rooney, who became the fastest head coach in program history to win 50 games, when he served as CSUM's head men's basketball coach. During his tenure with the program, Rooney also spent three years as its scouting and recruiting coordinator, and another three as an assistant coach.
The all-time series has been evenly played by both squads with the Keelhaulers holding a 20-19 advantage, a record that includes a split of the last six played.
Saturday's contest in Atherton is CSUM's inaugural head-to-head game, and season opener for Montana Western — a team that finished third in the Frontier Conference last season with an 18-12 record and returns all but two members from that squad.
