CSUM ends season with a rivalry thriller on Senior Day

VALLEJO, Calif. -  There are exceptions to everything in life, including the saying "numbers never lie" because the box score of Sunday's Cal Pac Conference game does not accurately reflect the action that took place at Bodnar Field.

Before the game began, Cal Maritime soccer honored seniors Brittany Holloway, Sarai Alonso, Mia Rathsack, Erika Tam, Vonne Ng-Bader, Nathan Witte, Dillon Shelton, Jasen Nicolas, Ronald Squier and Connor Wadhams in a Senior Day ceremony that also recognized women's soccer juniors Madalyn Reynolds, Maya Sortor, Kate Dabrow and Amanda Carvalho.

Even though Pacific Union outshot the Keelhaulers, 20-8, Cal Maritime's attempts took place on dangerous scoring opportunities since the Pioneers' keeper was forced to make saves on five of those chances and dominated the possession battle both halves.

On the other side of the field, PUC's strategy was quantity over quality as the deciding shot of the game took place on a free kick just outside the box that curled inside the upper right-hand corner of the goal.

Jose Diaz led all Keelhaulers with three shots and two on frame; Witte collected five saves throughout his final appearance on his team's home turf.

Cal Maritime ends the season with a 1-16 overall and 1-11 Cal Pac record; Pacific Union pushed its records to 5-7-4 and 5-6-1 with Sunday's result.
