VALLEJO, Calif. – If you watched Cal Maritime compete in recent weeks, you know firsthand there is zero hyperbole to the following statement: Nevermind the Keelhaulers' record, they are currently one of the most dangerous teams in the Cal Pac Conference.
The program will look to continue its ascension this weekend in Southern California when Saint Katherine and Westcliff witness firsthand why numerous conference teams struggled against a women's basketball program on the rise when CSUM visits Oceanside and Irvine on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Due to unforeseen circumstances with its home facility, Saint Katherine relocated Thursday's game to nearby MiraCosta College and its gymnasium (building 5200). A MCC campus map is available by clicking the link provided above or by entering the following address into your navigational website/app of choice: 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, CA.
To accommodate this week-of pivot, tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Two days later, Westcliff will host a Cal Maritime squad that features numerous players with top-five individual and team rankings in Saturday's 2 p.m. contest.
Highlighting the Cal Pac's top three-point shooting team — no squad scored more baskets from distance throughout league play than the Keelhaulers' 82 — are senior forward Alicia Porter, junior guard Kai Kraus and sophomore guard Aysia Santos since they sit among the conference's top players in a variety of categories.
Porter ranks No. 4 throughout Cal Pac action with her scoring (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (10.3) averages as she and Benedictine Mesa's Alze Ruiz are the only players averaging a double-double; Santos' 4.8 assists per game is the second-highest figure among all league players; Kraus ranks No. 10 by averaging 2.0 steals per game.
After nearly upending first-place Antelope Valley and UC Merced on the road in recent matchups, CSUM will battle a USK team that lost its last five overall and four of the last five at home.
Westcliff split its last four played and, like the Keelhaulers, will face an even split of its final six games of the regular season once this weekend ends. Cal Maritime will head home Sunday night with a three-game homestand starting, February 8 versus La Sierra, with the Warriors opening their Arizona road trip the same evening at Park Gilbert.
