Hunter scores early in Keelhauler debut, Squier’s strike leads to 2-2 tie

PORTLAND — Ronald Squier and Nikhil Hunter only took once shot apiece during Friday afternoon's season opener at Williford Field in Portland, but each strike found the back of the net to help Cal Maritime record a 2-2 draw at Multnomah.

New NAIA rules regarding overtime were enforced in the Keelhaulers' first game of 2022: Overtime, or double overtime, will only take place in postseason matches as games with a tied score, at the end of regulation, will officially end with that result.

Hunter's strike took place in his debut for the Keelhaulers, which pulled his team even in the 10th minute following an early goal scored by the host Lions just over four minutes prior.

Even though MU regained the lead at halftime, Squier erased his team's deficit in the 53rd minute by scoring his fourth career goal.

Tied at two in the waning moments of the game, another CSUM newcomer, Nic Kashiwai's attempt to break that tie for good was thwarted by Lion goalkeeper Jose Lopez, which prevented Multnomah from suffering a last-minute loss.

Noah Anderson and Jose Diaz also recorded one shot apiece in their inaugural game at CSUM; as was the case with their other three teammates, each attempt was on goal.

Cal Maritime's first-ever Oregon road trip will conclude tomorrow night when it faces Warner Pacific in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest. The Keelhaulers will arrive to Eastside Timbers Sports Complex with a 0-0-1 overall record; after collecting wins in three of its first four games of 2022,  Multnomah will continue its season at 3-1-1.
